Module 1: ISEE Verbal

Strategies and content for the Verbal Reasoning section, including synonyms and sentence completions.

ISEE Verbal Reasoning Overview

This section tests a student's vocabulary, word relationships, and verbal logic.

Format & Question Types

There are two types of questions:

1. Synonyms

  • Students choose the word closest in meaning to a given word
  • Tests vocabulary knowledge
Example:abundant → plentiful

2. Sentence Completions

  • Fill in the blank(s) in a sentence using context clues
  • Tests vocabulary + reasoning + reading skills
Example:Although she was tired, she remained ____ during the performance.

Number of Questions (by level)

  • Lower Level: 34 questions
  • Middle Level: 40 questions
  • Upper Level: 40 questions

Timing

  • Lower Level: 20 minutes
  • Middle & Upper: 20 minutes

  • Logical reasoning

Important Notes

  • Questions increase in difficulty as you go
  • There is no penalty for guessing
  • Strong vocabulary prep is critical
